Frequently Asked Questions
Mold testing is the process of collecting air or surface samples to determine the presence and type of mold in a home or building. It helps identify hidden mold growth and assess indoor air quality. Hiring a licensed mold testing company ensures the testing is performed according to TDLR standards for accurate and actionable results.
A certified mold inspection and testing expert will collect air and/or surface samples using specialized equipment. These samples are sent to a lab for analysis to detect the presence of mold spores, identify species, and determine spore concentration. This process helps develop a clear plan for remediation, if needed.
Yes, a mold inspection is typically required before testing to visually assess the property for signs of mold or water damage. Texas law requires mold assessors to be licensed, and the inspection must be conducted according to TDLR regulations. The inspection results determine where testing is most needed.
While mold testing provides valuable information, it should be used alongside a full mold inspection to accurately evaluate indoor safety. A licensed mold testing company can interpret lab results in the context of your home’s condition. This helps you make informed decisions regarding remediation and air quality.
Mold testing is recommended after water damage, during home purchases, or if you notice persistent musty odors or health symptoms. If you live in a humid area like Houston, regular mold inspection and testing can help prevent long-term issues. Always work with a TDLR-licensed provider for compliant and accurate testing.
Air quality testing identifies harmful contaminants in your indoor environment, including mold spores, VOCs, allergens, and particulate matter. A home air quality test provides insight into the cleanliness of your air and potential health risks. It’s especially helpful if you experience allergies, asthma, or unexplained symptoms indoors.
You should schedule indoor air quality testing if you’ve had recent water damage, notice persistent odors, or suffer from ongoing respiratory issues. A mold and air quality testing expert can identify hidden problems affecting your home’s safety. Testing also helps ensure a healthy indoor environment after mold remediation
Yes, many mold inspection services include air quality testing as part of their assessment. This allows professionals to detect airborne mold spores and evaluate your home’s overall air safety. Using both methods together provides a complete picture of your home’s environmental health.
Licensed inspectors use calibrated air sampling pumps and cartridges to collect air from different parts of your home. These samples are analyzed by a certified lab for mold spores, allergens, and pollutants. The results guide remediation and improve indoor living conditions.
DIY home air quality tests may offer general insights, but professional indoor air quality testing is far more accurate and reliable. Licensed mold and air quality testing companies follow strict sampling protocols regulated by TDLR. For serious concerns, always hire a certified professional.
Radon is a radioactive gas that can accumulate indoors and is a leading cause of lung cancer. Radon testing services help determine whether radon levels in your home exceed EPA-recommended safety thresholds. Professional testing ensures accurate results using certified radon tester equipment.
During a radon inspection, a technician places short- or long-term radon detectors in key areas of your home, such as basements and crawlspaces. These devices measure radon levels over time and are then analyzed. Based on results, mitigation may be recommended to reduce radon exposure.
Yes, radon testing during a home inspection is highly recommended, especially in areas where radon is known to be prevalent. Many buyers now request radon testing as part of the home inspection process. A licensed radon testing company will ensure results meet state and EPA standards.
The EPA recommends testing your home for radon every 2 years or after significant structural changes. Even homes that previously tested low for radon may develop issues over time. Scheduling regular radon testing home inspections helps protect your family’s long-term health.
Yes, radon testing must comply with state guidelines and be performed by trained and licensed radon inspectors. Professional radon testing services use certified devices to ensure accurate readings. Always verify your radon testing provider follows TDLR-compliant procedures
A mold assessment involves a detailed inspection and testing to determine the presence, type, and extent of mold growth. It must be conducted by a licensed mold assessment consultant in Texas, per TDLR guidelines. Mold remediation, on the other hand, involves removing the mold and is typically performed by a separate licensed mold remediation company.
Yes, Texas law requires a mold assessment to be completed and a Mold Remediation Protocol created before any mold removal begins. The mold inspection company must be licensed and separate from the remediation team to prevent conflicts of interest. This ensures transparency and protection for the homeowner.
A mold assessment report includes findings from the visual inspection, lab results from any testing, moisture readings, and a recommended mold remediation protocol. This document must comply with TDLR regulations and be prepared by a licensed mold assessor. It serves as a roadmap for the remediation process.
Costs vary depending on the size of your home and the extent of the suspected mold problem. A licensed mold inspection company will provide a quote based on inspection scope and testing requirements. Investing in proper mold assessment services ensures your remediation process is safe and compliant.
In Texas, the same company cannot legally perform both mold assessment and remediation on the same project. This is to avoid conflicts of interest and protect consumers. Always hire a separate, TDLR-licensed mold assessment provider before selecting a mold remediation company.
Mold detection services use advanced tools and techniques, including infrared cameras and air sampling, to find hidden mold. Some professional mold detection companies also use mold detection dogs, also known as K9 mold detection units, trained to sniff out mold in hard-to-reach areas. These methods help identify mold growth before it becomes a major health issue.
Yes, mold detection dogs are trained to identify even low levels of mold behind walls, floors, and ceilings. K9 mold detection can be more sensitive than standard equipment in certain scenarios. However, findings should still be verified by a licensed mold inspector for compliance with TDLR requirements.
You should consider hiring a mold detection service if you notice unexplained odors, water damage, or health symptoms with no visible mold. These services are ideal when traditional inspections fall short. A professional mold detection company can confirm presence of mold and recommend further testing or assessment.
Not exactly. Mold detection identifies possible mold presence using sensory or visual tools, such as mold detection dogs or thermal imaging. Mold testing, on the other hand, involves lab analysis to determine mold type and spore concentration. Both are often used together for a comprehensive mold inspection.
While mold detection dogs themselves aren’t regulated, the overall mold inspection and testing process must be conducted by a TDLR-licensed mold professional. Any findings used for remediation must be verified by a licensed mold assessment provider. Always ensure your chosen mold detection service works in compliance with state regulations.

- I'm so glad I contacted Lance at LoneStar Mold Testing. Like so many people, This was the first time I've had to look for and subsequently hire someone to test for mold. In the process of refinancing my house, the appraiser for the mortgage company thought that there might be mold in the walls. I tried explaining that what they were seeing was a discoloration where my wife had tried to remove old wallpaper as she had gouged the sheetrock that left a rough patch that DID look awful... but, "it wasn't mold," I explained. The mortgage company had already made up its "mind" and wanted a mold test done.
I contacted 3 companies as is standard practice when looking for bids. Lance of LoneStar called me almost immediately after I'd posted a request for bids on HomeAdvisor. The other two waited until the next day to call or respond. Lance's message seemed sincere and that he'd answer any questions I might have. While the other two encouraged me to call them back for a bid, Lance's message was more reassuring. In the end, I chose LoneStar.
Lance DID answer my questions. all of them. I had several and he patiently answered them. He told me exactly what he was going to do as required by standard practices and well as the law. (As he said, "It's nothing personal. It's because I have my license on the line.") We set up a time for the inspection.
He was on time and professional - and friendly. I ushered him in and we engaged in a little small talk. I showed him the spot on the wall that drew the attention of the appraiser. He just shook his head and with a small smile of self-assurance said, "This'll only take a few minutes."
Indeed it took only a few minutes to get his samples.
The cost was reasonable and, like many self-employed pros, he preferred cash and gave me a small discount because he didn't have to pay the credit card fee.
Our appointment was about noon so I presumed that I'd get the results in a day or two because it was already getting late in the day and he'd told me that he had another one or two appointments later in the day. I was happily surprised that I received the results by about 7 o'clock that evening! I was able to file the pdf report with the mortgage company that same day which allowed me to close a day earlier!
If I need a mold inspector again, I'll call LoneStar Mold Testing with Lance. As he left my house he commented, "I hope I don't have to see you again . . . not because I don't like you or wouldn't want to come back over. I just hope you don't have a mold issue to deal with."read moreread lessTest for Toxic Materials & Mold I'm so glad I contacted Lance at LoneStar Mold Testing.
